State of Ease

about

State of Ease is a special song for me, because it’s really a prayer for healing, for myself. I’ve been through some painful, turbulent times over the last few years, emotionally and physically, and the only antidote to stress that I’ve found is to remind myself to get back to a “state of ease” -- of flow, acceptance, and calm.

Some call this feeling being centered, some call it groundedness. Some call it samadhi and can access this state in yoga or meditation. For me, these are hugely helpful tools, and so is music. Singing and playing infuse me with joy, and put me into a state of ecstasy and clarity. Being in nature also fills me with this sense of immense gratitude and a heightened awareness of beauty in the world.

The underlying thread that unites all of these practices is mindfulness, or presence: being fully in the present moment, in the here and now. This is much harder to maintain than it sounds, since our minds love to dwell upon the past and either fear or fantasize about the future.

A state of ease is not possible when mired in the past, with its myriad of regrets, nor is it possible while focused on the future, with its terrifying worries of the unknown or its delusional expectations; it is only accessible in the present.

Studies are showing that tiny micro-doses of cannabis and psychedelics like psilocybin can aid in alleviating the past/future focus loop and can bring us back to the present -- especially when experienced in combination with meditation and/or nature.

Being in an internal state of ease, no matter what the external circumstances, to me is the ultimate spiritual achievement. I have by no means mastered this, but with practice, it’s getting a little bit easier every day.

I hope this song serves to soothe you and put you into a state of ease.

lyrics

Oh to be in a state of ease
Floating free upon the breeze
Flying over golden seas
Wash over me, a state of ease

Oh to be in a state of ease
Hear me singing on bended knees
Remember me please
In a state of ease,
In a state of ease

So I’ll be in a state of ease
Floating free upon the breeze
Flying high over golden seas
Wash over me, a state of ease

Oh remember me please
In a state of ease
